If you work out extra hard, add a few more reps or spend more time on the treadmill is that enough to get your butt into a smaller pair of pants? Not a chance. Ask any fitness pro or nutrition expert and you will hear that diet is anywhere from 70 to 90% responsible when it comes to transforming and improving that bod of yours (not to mention the health of your heart). Bummer eh? Well fear not my fellow fitness freaks, it’s really not that bad. Getting in tip top shape and still eating delicious foods is certainly possible, it just takes a little knowledge and a dash of creativity. Through years of trail and error, I’ve come up with some tips that will keep both your taste buds and your waistline happy.

Condiments, condiments, condiments!

Ok, so you’ll have to ditch the full fat mayo but there are lots of ways to add flavor to your fave foods. The following is a list of taste enhancers that may be used in a free for all manner without sabotaging your efforts.

Mustard

Salsa

Fat free, low calorie Italian dressing

Lemon juice

Lime juice

Low sodium soy sauce

Tobasco (or Franks red hot sauce)

Horseradish

Worcestershire

Balsamic vinegar

Spice it up!

Use one of the many pre-packaged rubs and seasoning mixtures like Greek, Italian, Montreal Steak, Lemon pepper etc. Check the label first to ensure that no additional sugar has been added and then simply rub the seasoning onto meats or fish before grilling. Super easy and delicious!

Let it soak

Marinades are a great way to add flavor to meat, poultry, fish and veggies without adding fat and calories. As long as you check the label for calories, feel free to use a store bought mix or even better, make your own. It’s fast and easy! Try this Moroccan inspired marinade on chicken, pork or fish.

1 tablespoon olive oil

2 small lemons, juice

1 teaspoon ground cumin

1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric

1 red chili pepper, minced

1 small onion, very finely chopped

2 garlic cloves, minced

salt and pepper

Mix all ingredients together, add chicken breasts, shrimp or pork and let marinade for 2 hours.

You don’t need to sacrifice flavor when you’re trying to improve your health and physique. Educate yourself on just what your body requires to build a rock hard temple and have fun with food! In addition, check out the workout programs designed by the WorkoutBOX team and you’ll be on your way to a fit, fabulous form!

You see, I had a bedroom that was a child’s wonderland, filled with all kinds of toys. My Mom is very organized so of course each toy had its place, but I never paid attention. Each time I grew tired of playing with a certain toy, it stayed on the floor and I got a different one. It didn’t take long before I was lost in a sea of Barbies and lego and Mom would come in and tell me to clean it all up. I’d feel overwhelmed and protest with my big brown eyes. Mom would always remind me…”Shauna, if you picked up your toys and put them away each time you were done with one, you wouldn’t be left with a big mess”. My first lesson in consistency. If I consistently put my toys away, I’ll never have a big mess! That’s my analogy for being consistent with your workout program. If you’re consistent with your routine, it will be much easier to reach your goals than if you workout every now and then or whenever you ‘feel like it’. Being inconsistent with exercise (and diet for that matter) will just leave you with a big mess at the end, only it won’t be a mess of lego, it will be a mess of body fat and high blood pressure.

Consistency is defined as the steadfast adherence to the same principles, course and form. It is probably the most crucial factor in achieving and maintaining your fitness and weight loss goals. At the beginning of a program consistency is fairly easy to maintain as we are highly motivated and eager to see results. We make working out a priority at first but that motivation felt at the start tends to dwindle pretty fast. So how can you stay consistent when so many other things in life get in the way and commitments and chores pile up (much like my toys)?

Monitor your progress

Keep track of the progress you’re making. Sometimes all the motivation you need to keep following through is to see that you are able to lift more, run farther or fit into a smaller pair of jeans. Keep a journal of your reps performed, sets completed, weight lifted, miles ran, crunches crunched, pounds lost or inches shed. If you stay on top of the changes and improvements you are making it’ll make you run back for more.

Plan ahead!

There’s that word plan again! It’s simple but important! Get yourself a plan that suits your goals and lifestyle and follow it to a T. It’s hard to remain steadfast and true to your program if you have no idea what you’re supposed to be doing.

Keep things fun!

Boredom slaughters consistency. Although you need to be consistent with performing your workouts, that doesn’t mean the workout itself can’t change. Make your program progressive, applying appropriate and necessary increases in intensity and variety to keep it interesting and effective.

They have massive cobra shaped lats, biceps that are busting out of their skin tight shirt and a chest that some of us gals would pay thousands of dollars for. You see them about to burst a bizillion blood vessels while pounding out red faced reps of presses and preacher curls but if you look south you’d swear they were standing on a chicken. Why do so many dudes neglect their legs? Where are the squats, the deadlifts, the leg curls?

Now I realize that men tend to carry their strength in their upper bodies and naturally they would prefer to train chest and bis almost exclusively. I also understand that leg day, if done properly, is brutal, so it makes sense that so many guys would rather opt out of lunging their way to nausea and agony. Having said that however, balance in a weight training program is essential not only for functional purposes, but aesthetically speaking as well. I mean sure, you may have abs I could wash my delicates on and a set of pecs that Pamela Anderson would envy, but if your quads are the same circumference as your arms, you’ve got a problem.

If you want balance in both functional performance and physique, you’ll have to bite the bullet and mosey over to the squat rack. No doubt about it…leg day is tough! Your legs are comprised of numerous large muscles, making the workout excruciatingly taxing, assuming you’re doing it with enough intensity. However the rewards of a fabulous leg regime far exceed the temporary torture and torment. If you’re man enough to grin and bear it, you’ll reap massive gains in size, strength and possibly phone numbers.

If I had a nickel for every time I heard it I’d be writing this blog while chillaxin’ in my private jet, piloted by John Travolta himself, on my way to a weekend shopping extravaganza in Milan.

“How can I lose my belly?” “What can I do to get rid of my spare tire?” “What exercises will shrink my gut?” I know my answer never makes me popular but it’s the only honest one I can offer. You simply cannot spot reduce! In order to get rid of the flab on your midsection, you must follow a balanced, consistent and intelligent program of proper nutrition, calorie control and EXERCISE! I see you rolling your eyes and before you ask….there are no magic ‘muffin top’ pills, no fancy ab roller gadgets and no ‘break through metabolism stimulating, hormone regulating, fat melting, super power foods’ that are going to do it effortlessly for you. Enjoying the luxury of a flat midsection is earned through regular cardiovascular and strength training workouts coupled with a diet rich in nutrients designed to meet and not exceed daily caloric requirements. Bottom line.

Excess abdominal fat is an issue for both men and women and frustrating as it may be, there is a reason for it. Our bodies are designed to store fat as a survival mechanism, in order to keep us warm and our organs protected. From a bio-mechanics view, the abdomen is the most efficient place to store it, as it requires less energy to pack around in this location. In order to shed your spare tire you essentially have to out smart Mother nature through a sensible diet and regular workouts. Let’s face it, you don’t need to store that gut in order to prepare for cold winters or do all that hunter, gatherer stuff anymore.

For women specifically, the good old ‘muffin top’ serves a pro creative purpose. A large round belly, along with soft curvaceous hips and thick thighs used to drive the cavemen wild as it signified good reproductive health and prime fertile ground. These days the preference is usually (not always) a slightly leaner, more toned silhouette with a hint of washboard abs. Once again, in order to achieve that fit, firm look you’ll have to combine proper diet and exercise techniques. I know…I sound like a broken record again.

I know many people assume that doing endless crunches and using ab roller gadgets will be the answer to getting rid of the flab on their tummies but that simply isn’t rue. While ab workouts are certainly effective at building and toning abdominal muscles and improving core strength, you still will not see them if you don’t dissolve the layer/s of fat on top. You can do sit ups until the proverbial cows come home but that alone will not earn you a six pack. This is where a sensible diet and regular cardiovascular exercise comes in.

In short, your body will decide for you where it will let go of fat first and in what order. That you cannot change. You can however, encourage abdominal fat to burn away by dialing in your diet, picking up some weights and hopping on the treadmill consistently. Remember that healthy, long lasting fat loss takes hard work and patience! If that last 10 pounds is hanging on specifically at the mid-line of your body there really isn’t much you can do to change that besides tightening the belt (pun intended) on your nutrition and amping up the intensity of your workouts.

Sure enough, every time I design a nutrition program for a client whether it’s for fat loss, muscle gain or a combination of the two, I always hear the same million dollar question. Three or four days into their program I receive an email asking “So what can I have for alcohol? Am I allowed to drink?” I expect it and I can totally appreciate it since after all, I’ve been known to guzzle sip a bottle glass or two of pinto grigio in my time. So what’s the harm in a little wobbly pop indulgence every now and then while you’re trying to shed some fat and tone up? How much is too much? What’s the best choice and which ones should stay behind the bar?

Of course I’m sure you realize that abstinence from alcohol while trying to get in shape is the best plan of attack. After all, booze is loaded with empty calories and even just a few cocktails a week can potentially derail so much of your diligence and hard work, but let’s be realistic here. You will be faced with social engagements where liquor will be served and really, why shouldn’t we allow ourselves a little nectar of the Gods every now and then? Just keep a couple of points in mind.

Knowledge is Power

Educate yourself on what the best (and worst) choices are and apply this knowledge appropriately. Choose lower calorie beverages like wine, lite beer and reduced calorie coolers in place of sugar laden bevvies such as daiquiris, pina coladas and dark, heavy ales. If you prefer the hard stuff, choose your mix carefully. Opt for water, sugar free soda or reduced calorie juice as this can save hundreds of calories.

Hard liquor (Rye, Vodka, Rum, Gin)

64 Calories per 1 ounce

Wine

170 calories per 7 ounce glass

Beer (regular)

150 calories per 12 fl ounces

Guinness

210 calories per pint

Vodka or Rum Coolers

250 per 12 ounces

Crantini or Cosmopolitan

187 calories per 5 ounce drink

Pina Colada

375 calories per 5 ounce drink

Margarita

160 per 3.5 ounces

Don’t be a glutton!

When it comes to alcohol consumption, moderation and responsibility are crucial! Liquor contains an exorbitant amount of empty calories that will expand your waistline faster than you can crack a cold one. Having more than a couple may leave you feeling footloose and fancy free with one hand deep in the nacho platter and the other reaching for the hot wings.

The lesson here is that yes, it is acceptable ON OCCASION to enjoy an adult beverage or two while trying to shed a few pounds and get in shape. Just make sure you arm yourself with knowledge and make the best choices possible. Don’t overdo it, sip slowly and try to enjoy the social aspect of your evening more than what’s in your glass. On a different, yet much more serious note…please drink responsibly and never ever get behind the wheel! Cheers!

Beginners, intermediates and die hard gym rats may all experience improper technique in their workout routine from time to time. The correct execution of prescribed exercises is crucial to avoiding injury as well as realizing the full potential of your workout.

For those that are new to working out, it’s important to learn the proper technique of an exercise from a professional. While there are a lot of people in the gym that may be doing an exercise right, there are also a lot that aren’t, which could lead to injury. Have a knowledgeable personal trainer show you how an exercise needs to be performed so that you can get it right the first time and avoid picking up another persons bad habits.

For experienced gym goers, it’s a good idea to periodically re-evaluate your form. After an exercise becomes routine it can be easy to slowly slip into less than perfect technique. It’s best to have a professional take a look at your form and let you know if there are ways to improve. Check in every once in awhile and you’ll continue to reap the full benefits of your workout.

A large part of performing exercises properly is remembering to stay mentally focused on the task at hand. Visualize the way the movement should look while you are doing it and focus on the muscles involved. You shouldn’t be talking with the person next to you or your training partner, looking around or making a grocery list in your head. An effective training session takes just as much mental energy as it does physical. Concentrate on the correct posture and movement of your body and save everything else for later.

Keep your movements smooth and controlled. For example when performing a bicep curl, after you have raised the dumbbells, control them on the way down as well. Don’t just let your arms fall to your sides. The negative portion of the exercise needs to receive just as much effort and attention as the positive and vice versa.

Once you have learned the proper execution of an exercise keep a mental checklist of things to consider in avoiding injury. For example, when performing a squat you want to remember to keep your head up and your core tight. With a chest press done on a flat bench, you want to make sure your back stays flat against the bench to avoid a lower back injury. Learn what the specific cues are for each exercise you do and remind yourself of them throughout the workout.

Be prepared. Make sure your workout is suited to you and that you are working at the appropriate level for your ability. Your workout should be difficult enough in order to get the full benefits, but not so difficult that you can’t do them.

Dress appropriately. Wear proper shoes for your particular workout that are comfortable and offer good support. Your clothes should be lightweight, fit well, breathe well and be comfortable. If you are working out in the cold, dress in layers to easily adapt to your changing body temperature.

Notice the equipment. If you are working out at a gym or health club, make sure their equipment is in good working order. If you notice any pieces that appear to be missing, frayed cords, deflated stability balls or anything else that doesn’t look right, notify an employee so things can be fixed.

Be very careful who you listen to, taking most advice and information with a grain of salt. Building muscle is more than just showing up at the gym, picking up a weight or two and devouring pounds of chicken breast. Just like everything else worth having in life, achieving success with your bodybuilding program takes knowledge, hard work, dedication and commitment.
Quite often I see highly motivated individuals with good intentions take on way too much at the gym the very second they decide to embark on a physical transformation. While hard work and dedication are in fact keys to bodybuilding success, your program needs to be compatible with you experience and ability. Choose a program that will allow you to see the results you’re after without risking injury and frustration.

DO – Educate yourself on nutrition

Depending on which fitness pro you talk to, you’ll hear that diet is anywhere from seventy to ninety percent responsible for your bodybuilding success or failure. If you completely ignore the foundations of proper muscle building nutrition it really won’t matter how many reps you crank out in the squat rack. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that consuming insane quantities of protein is all you need to concern yourself with. Your diet needs to be balanced, including quality protein, carbohydrate and fat in order to create a strong, hormonally balanced, efficient muscle building machine.

As long as you’re prepared for it you’ll be able to sail right through with the least amount of hair pulling. Here are a few tips that will come in handy when that number on the scale just won’t budge.

Be honest with yourself

Have you been keeping up with your food log? It’s normal for us to get so accustomed to our diets that we become complacent with journaling our meals and snacks. Be honest with yourself and take a good look at everything that goes into your mouth. A little bite here or a taste there can really add up at the end of the day. Get your pencil and paper ready and start being as detailed as possible. You may be surprised by how much is overlooked.

Squat, lunge, push and pull your way through

So many people (especially us ladies) ignore the fat loss benefits of a regular, consistent weight training program. Simply put, resistance training builds muscle and that muscle uses more calories to sustain itself than fat does. So build some muscle to burn some fat. Not only will you fit into a smaller dress size, you’ll also be stronger, firmer and less likely to suffer the effects of osteoporosis.

**Click here to get started on your muscle building program**

Keep your metabolism guessing

If you eat just 1200 calories every day, your body will naturally slow down its metabolism in order to survive on those 1200 calories. Mix things up a bit by alternating 1200 calorie days with 1400 or 1600 calorie days as well. This will keep your metabolism fired up and that of course is the key to shedding pounds.

Are you already struggling to stick with those health and fitness resolutions you promised yourself only 5 days ago? You’re not alone! As a personal trainer and nutrition consultant I see the exact same pattern every January! Good people, with great intentions pack the gyms and line up in health food stores for a solid three weeks, determined to stick with their goals this time! By the end of the month though, they’ve somehow fallen off the horse and the only people that remain at the gym are the ones that are there all year long! So how do they do it? How is it possible to stay focused on a diet plan and workout program when so many other things get in the way? Once again, it all comes down to the plan. Use the SMART technique to keep yourself on the right track and really achieve success this year!

**Choose a program professionally designed for your specific goals!! Go to WorkoutBOX programs!**

S is for SPECIFIC

Define your goals in specific statements. “I want to lose some weight and get in shape” is not specific. “I want to lose 10 pounds of fat and a minimum of 2 inches off my belly” is far more tangible.

M is for MEASUREABLE

How will you measure your progress? Will you gauge success by pounds melted per week, total inches lost or by body composition analysis? Keep a daily log of nutrition intake and workout routines while being consistent with monitoring and measuring progress along the way.

A is for ATTAINABLE

If your goal is to lose 10 pounds by next weekend, you need to revise. Set your goals in small, attainable increments to avoid frustration and defeat.

R is for REALISTIC

If you have always lived a sedentary lifestyle, expecting to run and lift weights six days per week at the get-go is unrealistic. Be honest with yourself about what you are really willing to commit to. Start with a dedication of three thirty minute workouts per week and go from there.

T is for TIMELY

Decide on a date or event to set your goals deadline for. ‘Someday’ and ‘eventually’ aren’t timelines. For example, instead of saying “At some point I’d like to run a 10k”, try telling yourself “I want to train for and participate in the Labor day 10k run”. This provides a specific time frame so that you can set a plan in motion to actually realize your goal on that date.

**Choose a program professionally designed for your specific goals!! Go to WorkoutBOX programs!**
